But Jon was appropriately seething when taking on the typically conservative screed - they always pronounce with authority what a liberal thinks and why ... and they almost always get it wrong.

Professionalism ... not so much

Oh, those "professional journalists" ... with their "standards," and their "ethics," and ... their egos. Really. Do stories like this, or this lend credibility to the MSM (not that Rupert's "news" has much credibility anyway)? And you can ALL take a bow: the ego-maniacs who give the news a face and behave as if their face is the important part; the "anonymous source" gossipmongers; and, the other "journalists" who write this shit once it's dished to them (yeah, I'm lookin' at you, HuffPo).

Honest to goodness. The First Amendment and freedom of the press is sooooo wasted on some people.

GOP Bemuses Me

I confess utter confusion. Why is this woman the de facto head of the Republican party? Or, if not the head, in the running to be its head? I know the media are giving Sarah Palin all kinds of attention. It's as if they take her seriously. She, to me, is the female version of George W. Bush with one key difference: her folksiness, unlike his, is authentic. She is like our former president in that she embodies anti-intellectualism. That is not to say that she does not possess a kind of practical knowledge, as well as a helluva lot of moxie (being un-self-aware tends to make people brave). However, she has been described as "intellectually incurious," and the fact that the McCain campaign kept her sequestered from the media for so long after she was named as his running mate, combined with her abysmal performances with Charlie Gibson, Katie Couric, and in the vice-presidential debate, provide me with enough evidence for me to be comfortable with that description of her. It also comports with my own conclusions about her mental heft.

However, let's leave aside questions regarding her intelligence. There are plenty of other objectionable character traits that we could consider. For instance, she isn't exactly the poster child for "personal responsibility," a phrase the GOP acts like it patented. She certainly knows how to play the "victim" card, and she isn't all that big on ... well, responsibility, as it turns out. Then there's her tenuous relationship with the truth. We already know she'll say just about anything in an attempt to disparage our current president. In fact, you might say we been knowin' that. And she doesn't stop there. She apparently prevaricates on even somewhat irrelevant matters: how did she make the decision to run with McCain? She told Hannity one thing, and Oprah something else. And speaking of Oprah's interview of Palin, I am shocked that the big O didn't go all "James Frey" on her! I mean, have you seen the laundry list of lies in Going Rogue?

And yet, there she is. In the news and in the spotlight, for better or for worse (another writer who thinks she's about to destroy the Republican party ...). Is it the media? Is Sarah Palin a media-driven phenomenon? Maybe. However, maybe it's the Grand Old Party itself. Who in the Republican leadership is doing anything? I mean anything other than criticizing the president and the Democrats. Who in the Republican party has, in the president's parlance, picked up a mop? Anybody? In fact, who in the Republican party has bothered to pick up a mop for the last 8 years? It isn't too much hard labor to give one president a blanket "yes," and the next a blanket "no." These guys have been on autopilot for a while now. Perhaps Sarah Palin is simply filling a void. Forgive me if I think that's a little bit like a black hole filling a wormhole (if you're a science geek, and you've never left me a comment here, now's your chance! Let me have it).

Alas, GOP. Alas.

Read it with me ...

Long time reader mamamimi sent me a link to this article: Sarah Palin Rules the GOP - And She Will Destroy It.

I haven't read it yet, but thought we might do so together. I have to say that I wish I had the faith that Max Blumenthal's title suggests. Blumenthal seems to believe the American center will hold ... and that Palin is way too far to the right to have broad appeal or influence to wield on the entire American political scene (at least, that's what I assume to be one of the article's assertions - I haven't read it yet). Really? 2 words: Fox News. Gee, it would be great to have a working FCC about right now ...

I've Got an Idea!

New idea for a reality show: we put a 6-year old boy in a helium balloon (only we really don't - we put him in a cardboard box instead), send him to the Survivor location, and let him compete with other 6-year olds to be the next American Idol Junior. In the meantime, we follow the antics of his fugitive parents who fled after Judge Judy took their guilty pleas for something or other (but not child endangerment), and sentenced them to hard time without television. While on the lam, they chase storms AND, at the same time, they are being chased by The Policewomen of Broward County, Dog the Bounty Hunter and the repo man. THEN, they somehow make their way onto the Whale Wars boat (after being featured on episodes of 48 Hours, Dateline, and The Graham Norton Show) ... The prize for the contestants (once we figure out who exactly makes up the pool of contestants) is to be mocked mercilessly on an episode of Southpark.

I smell Emmy.

Thank You, Veterans

Thank you for your sacrifices; my prayer is that a grateful nation will show its gratitude appropriately, in a myriad of ways, and not just with yellow ribbon magnets and platitudes.

Recovering from war. Another of your monumental tasks.

Rude!

[description of what I am about to be in this post].

Get out of my country, you sleazy, disrespectful, delusional, untalented hack. Mr. Murdoch, you may live in a world where all it takes to garner "respect" is lots of money and the accumulation of wives, but that doesn't cut it with me. I suspect if your bank account actually reflected your level of integrity, your toadies would flee from you faster than rats from a burning ship. I could overlook the fact that you are an asshole if you hadn't done so much damage to the landscape of democracy in this country by your influence-peddling and flagrant use of propaganda for some vision and agenda all your own.

So what if you know how to make loads of money? So do prostitutes. And at least they're honest about their lack of sincerity.

Just get the hell out of my country and keep your effin' asinine irrational Beckish opinions about MY president to your effin' self.
