I confess utter confusion. Why is this woman the de facto head of the Republican party? Or, if not the head, in the running to be its head? I know the media are giving Sarah Palin all kinds of attention. It's as if they take her seriously. She, to me, is the female version of George W. Bush with one key difference: her folksiness, unlike his, is authentic. She is like our former president in that she embodies anti-intellectualism. That is not to say that she does not possess a kind of practical knowledge, as well as a helluva lot of moxie (being un-self-aware tends to make people brave). However, she has been described as "intellectually incurious," and the fact that the McCain campaign kept her sequestered from the media for so long after she was named as his running mate, combined with her abysmal performances with Charlie Gibson, Katie Couric, and in the vice-presidential debate, provide me with enough evidence for me to be comfortable with that description of her. It also comports with my own conclusions about her mental heft.
However, let's leave aside questions regarding her intelligence. There are plenty of other objectionable character traits that we could consider. For instance, she isn't exactly the poster child for "personal responsibility," a phrase the GOP acts like it patented. She certainly knows how to play the "victim" card, and she isn't all that big on ... well, responsibility, as it turns out. Then there's her tenuous relationship with the truth. We already know she'll say just about anything in an attempt to disparage our current president. In fact, you might say we been knowin' that. And she doesn't stop there. She apparently prevaricates on even somewhat irrelevant matters: how did she make the decision to run with McCain? She told Hannity one thing, and Oprah something else. And speaking of Oprah's interview of Palin, I am shocked that the big O didn't go all "James Frey" on her! I mean, have you seen the laundry list of lies in Going Rogue?
And yet, there she is. In the news and in the spotlight, for better or for worse (another writer who thinks she's about to destroy the Republican party ...). Is it the media? Is Sarah Palin a media-driven phenomenon? Maybe. However, maybe it's the Grand Old Party itself. Who in the Republican leadership is doing anything? I mean anything other than criticizing the president and the Democrats. Who in the Republican party has, in the president's parlance, picked up a mop? Anybody? In fact, who in the Republican party has bothered to pick up a mop for the last 8 years? It isn't too much hard labor to give one president a blanket "yes," and the next a blanket "no." These guys have been on autopilot for a while now. Perhaps Sarah Palin is simply filling a void. Forgive me if I think that's a little bit like a black hole filling a wormhole (if you're a science geek, and you've never left me a comment here, now's your chance! Let me have it).
Alas, GOP. Alas.
