Right on Cue

Last October, Robert Dreyfuss of Rolling Stone Magazine wrote the following:

Sometime early next year [2008!], Dick Cheney is planning to start his third war in the Middle East. According to a wide range of Washington insiders — from Cheney sympathizers to anti-war activists — the vice president is angling behind the scenes for yet another unilateral military action, this time aimed at toppling the clerical regime in Iran. "It's an open secret," one leading analyst of Iranian relations tells Rolling Stone. Even though America remains bogged down in twin conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the insiders add, Cheney still has the clout to get President Bush to give the order — despite strong opposition from the State Department and the Pentagon, both of which believe that attacking Iran could have catastrophic consequences for the United States.

Well, that comes as no surprise to anyone who knows who Seymour Hersh is. As the saying goes, timing is everything. So, right on cue, someone with some clout must point an accusing finger. Iran - IRAN - is behind the recent Green Zone Attack in Baghdad. From the BBC: "Gen. David Petraeus told the BBC he thought Tehran had trained, equipped and funded insurgents who fired the barrage of mortars and rockets." What a convenient distraction from the fact that the surge has failed in its ultimate purpose, which was to give the Iraq government enough breathing space to get on track politically. Al-Maliki's government has not done so.

Cue Dick "Warlord" Cheney. Hey, Mr. Halliburton! While you're gittin' all jiggy wit it, don't forget Afghanistan's insurgents. Who "trained, equipped and funded" them? Oh, I know. That's so '80's. And, anyway, Cheney already has kind of "declared war" on the CIA, what with blaming it for "intelligence" mistakes related to Iraq, hiding his own personal Iranian "sources" from it, outing its agents - specifically, real Iranian sources - and the like.

That's a lot to chew on, folks, but every day that goes by that we fail to impeach this mad man, we do so at our own peril, and the peril of innocent civilians in other nations. Did you know that after Nixon's infamous Saturday Night Massacre, the White House was flooded with over 500,000 telegrams of protestation?
